Modern World History Test 1 Review Sheet: Chapters 14-15

What do I need to know?
You are responsible for knowing the following:

Chapter 14:
  • The motivations, methods, and means of European exploration and conquest, including:
    • Characteristics of European culture that contributed to exploration/conquest
    • The role that European states played in exploration/conquest (for example, Portugal and Spain)
    • The role of technology; specific examples of maritime and military technology and their significance
    • The actions/accomplishments of specific explorers/conquerors, such as
      • Prince Henry the Navigator; Bartolomeu Dias; Vasco de Gama; Columbus; Magellan; Cortez; Pizzaro
  • The impact the Europeans had on the following regions:
    • Africa
    • The Americas
  • Major aspects and significance of the Columbian Exchange and the African Slave Trade

Chapter 15: 
  • You should know and understand the major changes occurring in Europe at the beginning of the Early Modern period, including
·      The growth of state power
·      Changes to the social structure
·      The impact of printing technology

·         The major events, people, and ideas associated with the Protestant Reformation, including:
§  Practices of the Catholic Church that led to the Reformation, such as the sales of relics and indulgences and the corruption of the church hierarchy
§  The roles of Martin Luther and John Calvin and their contributions to the Reformation (such as sola fide, sola scriptura, and church organization)
§  The political consequences of the Reformation and the spread of the Reformation around Europe (for example, the Reformation in England)
§  The Anabaptist movement
§  The Catholic Church’s response to the Reformation
·         The Jesuits
·         The Reformed Papacy
·         The Council of Trent

  • The causes, major events, people, and consequences of the major wars of the 17th century:
·      The French Civil Wars/Wars of Religion
·      The Spanish Armada
·      The 30 Years War

  • The changes brought by these wars, including:
·      The changes to the way wars were fought (weapons, armies, etc.)
·      The emergence of Absolutism and Limited Monarchy, specifically related to Louis XIV of France and the English Civil Wars

  • The role and significance of witch hunts/trials in Early Modern Europe

  • The major characteristics and achievements of the Baroque period

  • The difference between a primary source and a secondary source and how to make use of a primary source

What is the format of the test?
Whether you are taking this class or Honors credit or College Prep credit, the format will be the same (there will be variation in the questions):
  • 15 multiple choice questions, each worth 3 points each (45 points total)
  • 2 essay questions—you will choose ONE of them—and answer it, (55 points total)
