Military History Marking Period 1 Project--History of Military Technology

Project Summary:

Your project this marking period is research a type or specific example of military technology, create a presentation based on that research, and deliver your presentation to the class.  This project is worth 30% of your marking period grade.

Project Specifics:

  • You may select any type of military technology--offensive (weapons), defensive, communications, transportation, etc.
    • It may be a "family" of technology, such as "tanks" or a specific type, such as the M1-A1 Abrams, for example
    • No two students may have the same topic--in other words, only one of you may do "tanks" as a topic, but someone else could do a specific type of tank, as long as only one student did that specific tank.
    • You will sign up for your project topic this Friday, September 20th
  • Your research should focus on the following:
    • the origins of the technology/first use of a specific type
    • who invented it, where, and when
    • what conflict(s)/time periods it was/is used in
    • it's role and effectiveness in warfare (tactical, strategic, etc,)
    • strengths/weaknesses and overall assessment of the technology
    • overall historical significance
    • your research should be based on a minimum of 7 sources, at least 3 of which must be primary.  Sources may be print or online, but they must be credible and included in your presentation (see below).
  • Your presentation should:
    • be Powerpoint
    • include the findings of your research
    • include a variety of images illustrating and demonstrating the technology (including capabilities/how it changed over time).  You may also include video, though video should not exceed more than three minutes of your total presentation.
    • may include quotations from experts/primary sources found through your research
    • include a works cited slide that lists all of the sources you used for this project
    • be approximately 15 minutes in length
  • Due date:  Presentations are due to me on October 14th via email; presentations will be delivered the week of October 14th.
  • Grading Criteria:
    • You will be graded on the following:
      • meeting the due date
      • meeting source requirements/thoroughness of your research
      • quality, comprehensiveness, and aesthetic of the slideshow
      • professionalism of the presentation
