What is the format of the test?
Whether you are taking this class or Honors credit or College Prep credit, the format will be the same (there will be variation in the questions):
  • 15 multiple choice questions, each worth 3 points each (45 points total)
  • 2 essay questions—you will choose ONE of them—and answer it, (55 points total)



Military History Marking Period 1 Project--History of Military Technology



Project Summary:


Your project this marking period is research a type or specific example of military technology, create a presentation based on that research, and deliver your presentation to the class.  This project is worth 30% of your marking period grade.



Project Specifics:



  • You may select any type of military technology--offensive (weapons), defensive, communications, transportation, etc.
    • It may be a "family" of technology, such as "tanks" or a specific type, such as the M1-A1 Abrams, for example
    • No two students may have the same topic--in other words, only one of you may do "tanks" as a topic, but someone else could do a specific type of tank, as long as only one student did that specific tank.
    • You will sign up for your project topic this Friday, September 20th
  • Your research should focus on the following:
    • the origins of the technology/first use of a specific type
    • who invented it, where, and when
    • what conflict(s)/time periods it was/is used in
    • it's role and effectiveness in warfare (tactical, strategic, etc,)
    • strengths/weaknesses and overall assessment of the technology
    • overall historical significance
    • your research should be based on a minimum of 7 sources, at least 3 of which must be primary.  Sources may be print or online, but they must be credible and included in your presentation (see below).  
  • Your presentation should:
    • be Powerpoint
    • include the findings of your research
    • include a variety of images illustrating and demonstrating the technology (including capabilities/how it changed over time).  You may also include video, though video should not exceed more than three minutes of your total presentation.
    • may include quotations from experts/primary sources found through your research
    • include a works cited slide that lists all of the sources you used for this project
    • be approximately 15 minutes in length
  • Due date:  Presentations are due to me on October 14th via email; presentations will be delivered the week of October 14th.
  • Grading Criteria:
    • You will be graded on the following:
      • meeting the due date
      • meeting source requirements/thoroughness of your research
      • quality, comprehensiveness, and aesthetic of the slideshow
      • professionalism of the presentation

Ancient World History Chapter 1 Fertile Crescent Test Review

What is this test on?
This test is on Chapter 1 of your textbook and all related material covered in class.

What do I need to know?
You are responsible for knowing the following:

  • The development and major characteristics of early humanity, focusing primarily on the developments concerning homo sapiens and the hunter-gatherer lifestyle of the Paleolithic Age

  • The significance of the Neolithic Revolution (including when it happened), the development of agriculture, and the emergence and major characteristics of civilization

  • Specific knowledge of all of the Fertile Crescent civilizations covered:
    • Sumer and the Sumerians; the Akkadian Empire; the 1st Babylonian Empire; Egypt; the Hittites; the Phoenicians; the Hebrews/Isrealites/Jews; the Assyrians; the Chaldean/New Babylonian Empire.  For each you should know the relevant:
      • Major events in each of their histories
      • Significant people
      • Major characteristics of each of the civilizations (as relevant:  religion, government, class structure, technology, etc.)

Military History Test 1 Study Guide

Test date:  Friday, September 13

This test will cover all of the readings and class content from the “Conceptualizing War” portion of the course:

·      Michael Howard’s “The Use and Abuse of Military History”
o   You should be able to identify and discuss Howard’s main points and arguments concerning military history and its uses.

·      The assigned excerpts from Clausewitz’s On War and Keegan’s A History of Warfare
o   You should be able to identify and discuss how Clausewitz and Keegan define war along with how Keegan challenges Clausewitz’s definition.

  • The assigned excerpts from Sun Tzu’s The Art of War
    • You should be able to identify and discuss Sun Tzu’s fundamental principles of warfare and how to achieve victory/success.

·      The Oxford Companion to Military History  articles “edged weapons,” and “small arms,” along with the weapons demonstrated in class and the YouTube videos depicting various types of weapons and their capabilities.
o   You should be able to recognize and identify specific weapons, discuss their use, and their tactical and strategic value.

·      The Oxford Companion to Military History  “strategy,” and “tactics”
o   You should be able to identify and discuss the main attributes of each of these concepts, including the purpose and various levels of strategy; the four functions of tactics; the relationship between technology and strategy; the relationship between technology and tactics; the theory of combined arms.

  • Siege warfare
    • the four ways of taking a fortified position; tactics and technology of siege warfare; identification of siege engines.

·      The principles and 9 examples of maneuver warfare 
o   Identify and discuss the principles
o   Recognize the various maneuvers and discuss their operation

Format:
