• Homework (due Wednesday):  read pages 648-651 (stop at "The Rise of Modern Japan") and write a response to the following:  how did life in China change during the 19th century and what caused it to change?  In what ways did it remain traditional?  Do you think China was better off at the beginning of the 20th century than it was at the beginning of the 19th?
