Week 1: August 19-23

Ancient World History 4th Period


 Tuesday:  Class Introduction
    • Homework, due Wednesday:  read pages 2-5 (The First Humans-The Neolithic Revolution) and write a response to the following:
      • What were the major characteristics of hunter-gatherer society (give at least 5)?  What lessons can we learn from hunter-gatherers today?
Wednesday:  Nomads
    • Homework, due Thursday:  read pages 5-8 and write a response to the following:
      • List the 7 characteristics of Civilization and discuss how each is still relevant today.  Which of the 7 do you consider to be the most important?  Which do you consider to be the least important?  Why?
Thursday:  Civilization
    • Homework, due Friday:  examine the image below.  How many of the 7 characteristics of civilization can you find depicted here?  Briefly list/describe them. 

Friday:  Civilization, con't.
    • Homework, due Monday:  read pages 9-13 (Civilization in Mesopotamia-Culture in Mesopotamia) and write a response to the following:  how did Sargon successfully conquer and maintain his empire?  Why is being the "first" at something considered to be important?

Modern World History, 6th Period

Tuesday:  Class Introduction
    • Homework, due Thursday:  read pages 390-396 (stop at The Portuguese Maritime Empire) and write a response to the following:  what technological and economic developments led to the "Age of Exploration?"  Why did the Europeans "lead the way?"
Thursday:  The Age of Exploration
    • Homework, due Friday:  read pages 396-400 (stop at Governing the Empires) and write a response to the following:  what factors contributed to the success of the Spanish over the Mexica and Inka empires?
Friday:  Conquest
    • Homework, due Monday:  read pages 400-406 (stop at Africa in Transition) and write a response to the following:  what is your view of Columbus?  Is the world has whole better of or worse of as a result of the "Age of Exploration"
